About Us

1st Discount Brokerage (1DB) was founded by William “Chip” Corley in 1995. After a decade at wirehouses, he left to build a firm that could offer clients a better investing experience. Chip felt that innovative approaches backed by enabling technology, and above all, a genuine passion for the business and well being of its customers should be the driving factors behind a community based brokerage firm.

Fueled by that entrepreneurial spirit, 1DB has since grown from a single office to an Independent Broker/Dealer with 19 retail community-based offices and $900 million in managed assets, while our partnership with Apex Clearing Corporation has enhanced our offerings.

It has been almost 2 decades since our founding, but our initial philosophy still guides our business today. 1DB believes that the best solutions are developed when financial professionals are encouraged to bring their ideas to life in a dedicated and supportive environment.

1st Discount Brokerage, Inc. is a registered investment adviser with its principal place of business located in Lake Worth, Florida. 1st Discount Brokerage, Inc. (1DB RIA) began conducting advisory business in 2002. Our approach is hands-on; we are available to communicate and interact with our trusted clientele. Through personal discussions in which goals and objectives based on a client’s particular circumstances are established, we develop an individualized investment policy and create and manage a portfolio based on that policy. Investment discretion is used when preferred by the client.

Investment Philosophy

The approach at 1db asset management (1DBAM) is to provide personalized asset management services in a disciplined, conservative, tax efficient manner.

Asset allocation is the bedrock of our investment philosophy. In today’s global market environment we contend that the allocation of assets is as critical as the selections themselves in addressing performance and managing volatility. Since the year 2000, the Wilshire 5000 composite stock market index has virtually remained flat, during which quality dividend paying stocks outpaced aggressive growth throughout both the internet bubble and the recent financial crises. In fact, the healthcare, consumer staples, utilities and energy sectors outperformed the market averages in the past 10 years and rewarded their shareholders handsomely. Nevertheless, retail investors have cast their votes aloud by exiting the risk-on assets (stocks) and entering the risk-off assets (bonds) as interest rates fell to historic lows. What’s next? What will happen if and when interest rates increase? Is our nation’s debt manageable? Are our politicians equipped and willing to make the right decisions? Will global unrest alter our way of living? Analyzing the “what’s next” is hard work. It is in the investigation of the “what ifs” that we identify the best options to guide our clients and provide our services.

1DB provides independent, client focused advice. We charge value-added fees quoted in advance, so there are no hidden costs. Whether they disclose it or not, a large number of advisors are motivated to sell a product that is most profitable for their firm. Fees may often be hidden from the client.
1DB offers a comprehensive approach to wealth accumulation and management. Our qualified team of professionals direct our clients on asset growth, tax strategy, advanced estate planning, and charitable contribution. Other RIA firms tend to focus on asset management and lack the education necessary for complete financial planning.
1DB’s team of financial planners are in business to serve the financial needs of our trusted clients. All financial services are provided by industry veterans, serving the areas of money management, tax consultation, finanical planning, insurance protection and retirement solutions. Quite a few investment advisors who have been in the business for a significant period of time have good sales training and investment backgrounds, but may not be able to integrate a combination of investment, insurance, tax and estate planning management.

William H. Corley, Jr.

FOUNDER, CHIEF EXECUTIVE AND CORPORATE OFFICER

William “Chip” Corley founded First Discount Brokerage, Inc. (1DB) in 1995. 1DB’s full-service discount value proposition offers investors both service and price breaks. Since its inception, 1DB has grown organically and through acquisitions: under Mr. Corley’s direction, the firm now includes 19 offices, 25 registered representatives, 4,000 clients and $900 million in customer assets.

In addition to holding a vast array of industry licenses, including series 7, 65, 24, 27, 31, 53, 55, 63, 4, and 218, in 2010, Chip received a Financial Planning Certificate from Kaplan University. Chip’s forte is money management; his approach in guiding private clients is conservative. With 29 years of experience, he understands that each investor’s financial goals and aspirations are distinctly unique; hence, he creates personalized financial strategies for his clients, with no two portfolios alike. Moreover, as a Registered Financial Consultant, he and his team of accountants provide financial planning services spotlighting asset protection, risk management, retirement income, and estate planning.

In 1986 Chip founded Corley Financial Services, a full service financial planning firm with an emphasis on safety and income. In 1989, Chip moved to New York to work on Wall Street as a Vice President of Global America, where he received the Chairman’s award for new business development. As the firm concluded operations, Chip joined Corporate Securities as a Sr. Vice President in Boca Raton where he helped to establish a European institutional business centering on U.S. equities and convertible securities. The institutional activity centered on the banking community in Switzerland, plus other major financial centers of Europe. In January of 1993, Chip joined Merrill Lynch as a Vice President, and as in prior assignments with other companies, he built a significant business and earned the President’s Club Award. Chip’s career in financial services spans over three decades, commencing during his senior year of college at Banker’s Life and Casualty as a field agent. Chip earned his Bachelor of Science degree at Palm Beach Atlantic University in 1984, and his MBA at Louisiana Baptist University in 1992. Aileen Gallagher

CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER AND FINANCIAL AND OPERATIONS PRINCIPAL

Aileen Gallagher is the Chief Financial Officer and Financial and Operations Principal of 1st Discount Brokerage, Inc. Aileen has been a significant part of the company since 1999.

Aileen started her career with a publishing company in midtown New York as a junior accountant and was soon promoted to accounting supervisor. She later went to work in the Wall Street area as an internal auditor with Bankers Trust Company. Aileen was employed by Bankers Trust for six years where she earned the title of Assistant Treasurer, supervising senior and staff auditors to perform financial and procedural audit examinations. When her family relocated to Florida, Aileen worked part time as an accountant prior to joining 1DB.

Aileen graduated Magna Cum Laude with honors in Accounting from Queens College of the City University of New York.

 

Nicky Cheng

CHIEF COMPLIANCE OFFICER AND CORPORATE ACCOUNTANT

Nicky Cheng is the Chief Compliance Officer and Corporate Accountant of 1st Discount Brokerage, Inc. Nicky’s career began in the brokerage industry as an accountant with Thomas F. White & Co. in 1999. She has been a successful, dedicated 1DB employee since 2002.

1st Discount Brokerage, Inc. hired Nicky as a Corporate Accountant in 2002. Throughout the years, Nicky’s responsibilities grew and changed. In 2008, she was promoted to COO where her experience in compliance, operations and trading broadened. Nicky assumed the duties of CCO in 2013; she is an executive manager who empowers others to succeed. Nicky currently holds the securities licenses 4, 7, 24, 27, 53, 66, 79 and 99. She is also a licensed CPA in Florida. She is fluent in English, Mandarin and Taiwanese.

Originally from Taipei, Taiwan, Nicky graduated Cum Laude with honors in Business Technology from Montana State University-Northern and earned her Master’s of Accounting from Golden Gate University in San Francisco, California.

 

Joel De Young

CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER and DIRECTOR of FIXED INCOME

Joel De Young served in the U.S. Navy from 1986 to 1994. Early in his enlistment, he was responsible for supervising a division of 40 enlisted personnel. Joel owned and operated his own business until starting in the brokerage industry in 1998. Joel joined 1st Discount Brokerage Inc. in 2002 as a registered representative. He started on the trading desk in 2007 and became the Manager of the Equity Trading soon thereafter. In 2012, Joel assumed the duties of Fixed Income Director. Soon afterwards, Joel was promoted to the position of COO. Joel currently holds the securities licenses of 7, 24, 53, 63, 66, 79, and 99. Joel is also a licensed insurance agent and the Insurance Principal of 1st Discount Brokerage, Inc.

Joel attended Basic Electronic Engineering School while in the Navy. He also attended the School of Design at Westwood University.

 

Dolores Strauss

MANAGING DIRECTOR

Dolores Strauss joined 1st Discount Brokerage, Inc. in January 2006 as a Managing Director. Dolores manages the IT team at the firm, handles personnel aspects of the business, and is in charge of special projects. She also serves as an escalation point for internal and external issues.

Dolores has over 40 years experience in the brokerage industry. She began her career at a small firm in the front office business of Ultronic Systems, which eventually became ADP. Dolores was hired as a data clerk, rose to Supervisor of the Commodity Group, and later transferred to Customer Service. After heading Account Management/Customer Service for 6 years, Dolores moved to Sales for front and back office services as a Global Account Manager. In 2000 she left ADP and joined US Clearing as Vice President of Strategic Accounts, where she led a team of Relationship Managers. Dolores then came full circle in the industry when she joined 1DB, a retail brokerage firm.

Dolores attended Burlington County College, majoring in Accounting.
